Boulder’s Fate Brewery faces nearly $300,000 in tax liens from state and federal tax authorities, in issues that have been ongoing since at least 2015.

Fate Restaurants LLC is facing two liens totalling $269,325 from the Internal Revenue Service. Fate owner Michael Lawinski said the liens were not new, but related to an existing lien filed against the company in 2016 for $83,799.

Lawinski also has a lien against his personal property in Louisville for $59,290, levied in mid-January.

“It’s a refiling,” Lawinksi said. ” It’s really the same issue from it was forever ago; we’re working with the same examiner at the IRS we have since 2016. It’s old news to us.”

Lawinksi said he “honestly can’t speak to” why the newly issued liens were for much higher amounts. Officials for the IRS did not respond to requests for comment by press time.

Boulder County Treasurer Paul Weissman said that it was possible for interest and fees to push up the amount of a lien. He also said he believes Fate is on a payment plan to bring current its delinquent tax bills.
